Are electrodes hazardous?
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: Welding electrodes are not normally considered hazardous as shipped or when handled. Gloves should be worn when handling to prevent cuts. Avoid inhalation of dust from these products.
Under normal conditions of use, however, welding rods emit significant quantities of metal fumes and other hazardous chemicals and do not meet the HCS article exemption.
Depending on the type of welding rod and the storing conditions, some electrodes can go bad in a matter of six months, while others may last for several years. While stick electrodes do not carry an expiration date, as a rule, you shouldn't keep them for more than a year.
Prolonged exposure to welding fume may cause lung damage and various types of cancer, including lung, larynx and urinary tract. . Health effects from certain fumes may include metal fume fever, stomach ulcers, kidney damage and nervous system damage.
These electrodes present no significant fire hazard; however finely divided metal powder which may be generated during grinding of the tips of electrodes, is highly flammable (especially when exposed to oxidizing compounds at elevated temperatures).
Why must the electrodes not be allowed to touch? This would create a 'short circuit' which can be hazardous. The current will flow directly from one electrode to the other and will not pass through the liquid. Electrolysis would not occur.
Health hazards from welding, cutting, and brazing operations include exposures to metal fumes and to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Safety hazards from these operations include burns, eye damage, electrical shock, cuts, and crushed toes and fingers.

Both acute and chronic health risks are associated with welding fume. Occupational lung disease, including lung cancer, is the most common health risk, but welding can also affect the eyes and skin. There is also a significant risk from asphyxiation when welding in confined spaces.
In the field, welding electrodes are usually referred to as "welding rods" so I will use that term here. "Stick Welding" is also the term of choice in the field for SMAW, the acronym for Shielded Metal Arc Welding. Stick welding used to be done with a bare welding rod.
What happens if electrodes get wet?
When stick electrodes absorb moisture from the atmosphere, they must be dried in order to restore their ability to deposit quality welds. Electrodes with too much moisture may lead to cracking or porosity. Operational characteristics may be affected as well.
When storing electrodes it is recommended that they be stored in a dry location and in their original box. If welding electrodes are not properly stored they can absorb moisture on the flux which can cause bubbles to develop in the weld.

A person may get an electric shock hazard if incidentally the hands or other part of the body create a bridge between the welding supply (e.g. the live welding electrode) and the welding return (e.g., workpiece) of the welding circuit/equipment. Increased electrical contact with the ground increases the risk of shock.
Researchers have discovered that welders develop symptoms of parkinsonism — a general term referring to disorders that cause movement problems that resemble those of Parkinson's disease — because of prolonged exposure to manganese, a chemical element from welding fumes.
Welding activities produce many hazards through the production of contaminants in welding fumes and ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the welding arc. Both of these are Group 1 carcinogens, meaning they can cause cancer in humans.
Electrical stimulation treatments have resulted in first, second and sometimes third degree burns. These burns are extremely painful and may result is permanent scarring. Patients that suffer electrical stimulation burns sometimes do not feel the damage during the treatment.
Do not use the Controller in locations subject to explosive or combustible dust, combustible gas, flammable vapors, corrosive gas, excessive dust, salt-water spray, or water drops. Always disconnect the 61F when a tester to perform insulation resistance tests on the Electrode circuit.
Electrodes often are made of metal. Sometimes they are graphite. But whatever they're made of, electrodes must be conductors. These electrodes are key parts of what scientists call an electrochemical cell.
Short term electrodes usually have a high initial adhesion, and these have foam backings, to support the additional weight of adhesive applied to them. However, the very latest electrodes have a non-porous backing material, but can be worn for up to 5 days without skin irritation.
The body contains fluids with ions that allow for electric conduction. This makes it possible to use electrodes on the surface of the skin to detect electrical activity in and around the heart and use an electrocardiograph to record the activity.
Where should electrodes be placed?
Regardless of a patient's sex, the positioning of the electrodes remains the same: V1 and V2 flank the sternal borders at the fourth intercostal space; V4, V5, and V6 align starting at the fifth intercostal space; and V3 goes on the midway point between V2 and V4.
Many of the substances in welding smoke, such as chromium, nickel, arsenic, asbestos, manganese, silica, beryllium, cadmium, nitrogen oxides, phosgene, acrolein, fluorine compounds, carbon monoxide, cobalt, copper, lead, ozone, selenium, and zinc, can be extremely toxic.
Electric shock is the most serious hazard posed by welding and can result in serious injuries and fatalities, either through a direct shock or from a fall from height after a shock.
Numerous studies indicate that welders may be at increased risk of neurological and neurobehavioral health effects when exposed to metals such as lead, iron and manganese. Carbon monoxide, heat and stress can also contribute to neurological impairments in welders.
No special handling of the welding stick waste is needed and it may be disposed in the regular trash.
It may cause injury due to electrical shock, fire or electrocution. A plug or electrical cord should not have exposed wiring. Exposed wires present a danger of electric shock or electrocution. Using an open front plug poses the risk of contact with live wires when plugging it to a electrical outlet.
Pneumosiderosis or Welder's lung is an occupational lung disease which is usually seen after chronic exposure to iron dust, especially in welders.
Epidemiology studies have shown that a large number of welders experience some type of respiratory illness. Respiratory effects seen in full-time welders have included bronchitis, airway irritation, lung function changes, and a possible increase in the incidence of lung cancer.
Welding arcs and flames emit intense visible, ultraviolet, and infrared radiation. UV radiation in a welding arc will burn unprotected skin just like UV radiation in sunlight. This hazard is true for direct exposure to UV radiation as well as radiation that is reflected from metal surfaces, walls, and ceilings.
Simple, Versatile, Effective. Electrode welding also known as manual arc welding, manual electrode welding, manual metal arc welding or shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) is usually the first welding process that welders are taught during training.
What is an electrode in welding?
Welding electrodes are metal wires with baked on chemical coatings. The rod is used to sustain the welding arc and to provide the filler metal required for the joint to be welded. The coating protects the metal from damage, stabilizes the arc, and improves the weld.
Electrodes must be safely stored and always be kept dry away from moisture. This is because moisture destroys the characteristics of the electrode coating. This may cause excessive splattering during welding. It can also cause weakness and cracks in the welded area.
In some instances, when bare skin is accidentally touched by the electrode emitting heat between 6,500°F and 10,000°F, a worker can be scorched almost immediately – producing third-degree burns.
If you mean can hold the flux layer of the electrode, then the answer is you shouldnt, but as long as you are wearing gloves and arent grounded or touching the work metal, then its your own risk. If you cant hokd a 14″ rod steady then try better braced stances, angles and breathing patterns to steady your hand.
Electrodes should not be re-dried over 3 times in the 300℃~350℃. Any electrode should be discarded if excessive re-drying causes the different operating characteristic or weld quality. Hermetically sealed can & vacuum packaging are moisture proof and do not require any special storage instructions.
For proper hygiene, the FDA requires electrodes to be labeled for single patient use only.
The average life expectancy of welding electrodes is around 2-3 years under optimum conditions.
To prevent underwater welders from being electrocuted a thick layer of gaseous bubbles are created externally around the electrode, covering the weld and shielding the electricity from water, corrosive gasses and other oxidising compounds.
To begin with, basic common sense dictates you shouldn't be outside in a thunderstorm – if you think the electrical charge from a welding machine packs a whalup, you better hold on to your shorts because a bolt of lightning will literally blow you away.
When welders don't properly protect their eyes from the arc, they commonly suffer welder's flash, or photokeratitis, a condition caused by exposure to intense ultraviolet radiation resulting in temporary blindness and extreme discomfort. More extreme eye injuries can result in permanent blindness.
Why do welders shake?
Workers chronically exposed to manganese in welding fumes may develop an extra-pyramidal syndrome with postural and action tremors.
Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that chronic exposure to welding fumes is associated with respiratory health effects, such as asthma, bronchitis, and lung function changes (16).
Welding fumes are far worse for you than smoking. Any time you weld you should be wearing a respirator with appropriate filters to the situation or even an approved fresh air supplied mask with an approved supply of fresh air(NOT off your shop compressor, it contains oil).
The life expectancy of a welder is between 50 and 60 years. However, this can be mitigated by wearing the proper safety clothing and taking all the necessary precautions.
Avoid or reduce exposure. Use local exhaust ventilation (LEV) to take the fume away at source. Use suitable respiratory protective equipment (RPE), for example a facemask, to protect workers from inhaling fumes.
Wear dry gloves free of holes or split seams. Change as necessary to keep gloves dry. Do not touch electrically “hot” parts or welding electrode with bare skin or wet clothing. Insulate yourself from the work piece and ground using dry plywood, rubber mats or other dry insulation.
Keep in dry and low-humidity conditions
Whenever electrodes absorb moisture from the atmosphere, dry them at once to restore the quality. If electrodes absorb too much moisture, it leads to porosity and weld cracking. So, if you are experiencing a decline in the electrode arc performance, check your storage.
If you want to store electrodes for more than a month, keep them at temperatures between +5°C / 41°F and 27°C / 80.6°F. Do not store the electrodes in the freezer or the refrigerator. Avoid extreme heat and exposure to direct sunlight.
Common electrodes used in Stick welding are 6010, 6011, 6013, 7018 and 7024 with the most common diameters ranging from 1/8- to 5/32-in. Each of these electrodes offers all-position welding capabilities (except 7024).

Unopened boxes of electrodes should be stored under warm and dry conditions that are maintained at all times to avoid possible absorption of moisture that permeates through the packaging and the flux coating. Once the boxes have been opened, the flux coating readily absorbs moisture.
When electrode holders are to be left unattended, the electrodes shall be removed and the holders shall be so placed or protected that they cannot make electrical contact with employees or conducting objects.
Unopened packages of electrodes have a shelf life of approximately 15 to 24 months depending upon the expiration date stated on the package. Never use electrodes that are past the expiration date.
Electrodes should be replaced daily to prevent skin break down and to allow optimal conduction. Limb electrodes are placed on the torso to reduce muscle artefacts during limb movement.
